Adelaide Town Hall access information

Construction

The Adelaide Town Hall is currently undergoing construction outside the front entrance. The building is covered in scaffolding, and there is a passageway (around 2m wide) to the front entrance under the scaffolding. It is still wheelchair accessible and accessible to most people.

ENTRY AND EXIT

Front foyer

The main entrance is an automatic, glass double door, with a standard ramp on the outside of the building. The flooring is concrete and smooth.

The entry also serves as the exit. It is step-free, and everyone uses the same entrance. When you enter the front foyer, it will likely be crowded, with people moving to the different areas. From here you can take the main stairs or the lift to the upper levels.

Lift

The lift is situated in the Front Foyer to the left of the main stairs. The dimensions are: width 1.95m; depth: 2.15m; height 2.3m; maximum weight: 2000kg, and it has a recommended maximum load of 26 people. The lift goes to every floor.

Main stairs

The main stairs are large, wide and made from marble. There are handrails on either side. There is a short landing in the middle of the first flight, then another wider area after the first flight which is the mezzanine level; the stairs then continue around the left side in a shorter, second flight, and up to Level 1.

COMMUNAL SPACES

There are four main communal spaces in use during Papercuts: the Quiet Room, the Upstairs Foyer, the Workshop Space, and the Auditorium.

Below are the main points to notice about access in each space.

Quiet Room (Prince Alfred Room, Level M)

The Quiet Room will be a place to rest with lower lights and reduced noise. You can bring water to drink in here.

The entrance to the Quiet Room is on the Mezzanine level. It can be reached via the main stairs or the lift. The floor here is on a slight gradient and slopes down towards the Quiet Room.

The doors are double swing doors. One will remain closed but there will be Papercuts volunteers present to open the door as needed. The door width when both doors are open is 150cm.

Inside, there is an area up steps but that will be closed off to public. Most of the Quiet Room is a single room with assorted bean bags and chairs.

The floor is flat carpet.

Upstairs Foyer (Level 1)

On level 1, there is a long foyer that leads to the Auditorium and the Northern Gallery. There will be staff here at a desk who can help you find where you need to go and explain the activities on offer.

There will also be rows of stalls along the walls here, full of artists selling their comics and other merchandise.

Workshop Space (Northern Gallery, Level 1)

The Northern Gallery is a space off the Upstairs Foyer, with access to bathrooms, and the Workshop Space.

Workshop attendees can gather in the Northern Gallery, and just before their workshop they can sit at the tables. Papercuts staff will check people in as they arrive.

This area is all on one flat level. The floor is carpet.

Auditorium (Level 1)

The Auditorium entrances are two large, heavy double doors that will remain open.

There is a small lip (less than 1cm) as the flooring changes from the carpet in the Upstairs Foyer to wooden flooring in the Auditorium.

The Auditorium is a large space which will be full of people talking and walking around. On Market Day, it will be full of stallholders who are showing off their comics. Comics, artwork and other merchandise will be available for purchase.

There is enough space between the stalls for two people to move side by side, but the area may be crowded at times.

Occasionally a Papercuts volunteer will make announcements over a P.A. system.

BATHROOMS

Bathroom 1 (Level 1 Northern Gallery: Women’s, Men’s, and Accessible)

In the Northern Gallery next to the Upstairs Foyer are three toilets: women’s, men’s, and a separate accessible bathroom.

The women’s and men’s do not have ambulant toilets.

The women’s has three stalls and two hand dryers, with no paper towels. There is a small open-top bin under the sinks, which are around 1200mm high without clearance underneath. There is a sanitary bin in one of the stalls.

The men’s has two stalls, a urinal trough, and one hand dryer, with no paper towels. There is a small open-top bin under the sinks, which are around 1200mm high without clearance underneath.

The accessible toilet has a right-hand rail next to it, and a standard accessible backrest. The space is around 2.5m x 2.5m, with clearance under the sink. There is a button-operated hand dryer, and a sanitary bin next to the toilet. There is also a baby change table in here.

Outside of the toilets is a water dispenser with paper cups and an open-top bin.

Bathroom 2 (Level M next to the Quiet Room: Women’s and Men’s)

Outside the Quiet Room are two toilets: men’s and women’s. The floor here is on a slight gradient and slopes down towards the Quiet Room.

There are no ambulant toilets here.

The men’s bathroom has four separated urinals and a single stall. There are two hand dryers. There is a small open-top bin under the sinks, which are around 1200mm high without clearance underneath.

The women’s bathroom has a small foyer at the entrance with a mirror. After this, there are five stalls, one with a sanitary bin. There are two hand-dryers, and a row of sinks, which are around 1200mm high without clearance underneath.

WAYFINDING

Around the venue, there will be digital signs on large screens directing people to the different areas, with simple language and clear text. There will also be some A3 signs on sign holders.

Outside the venue will be an A-frame directing people to the entrance. There will be Papercuts volunteers around to assist anyone with wayfinding.
